One of the greatest things about roots music in general, and bluegrass specifically, is that it continually brings in new generations of players to the fold. These young artists cut their teeth on the classics of the genre and then, very often, branch out into new directions, pushing the boundaries of the form, and inventing new styles while reinvigorating the overall framework of the music they love.

Ettore Buzzini only recently graduated from high school, but you might never guess that from listening to his new album Blue Blue Blue. I chanced upon his performance in my new hometown of Charlotte, NC, which is adjacent to Ettore’s home in Mooresville. At the show, I was intrigued with his faithful renditions of traditional bluegrass numbers contrasted with his classical music-leaning originals, coupled with grassy versions of hits by artists like Pharrell Williams and The Beatles. While working on an upcoming episode on the band Scythian this week, I noticed that Ettore was opening for them in Galax, VA this weekend, so I thought, why not have an opening podcast for the opening band, so to speak? Here is the result, a conversation with the banjo phenomenon who is on the Patuxent Records label, which helped bring in established stars like Danny Paisley, Mark Schatz and Michael Cleveland alongside him to play on his forthcoming album Blue Blue Blue.

Artist stereotypes do not apply

How many times have parents cringed when their children fell in love with a musician? Let's be honest, the world has looked askance at artists of all stripes (with notable exceptions) for most of our history. Musicians tend to be thought of as people who may be great at their art but who are nonetheless pretty bad at life skills like paying bills, getting to work on time, and sticking with the missus.

Aaron turns all those stereotypes on their head; he is not only a fantastic songwriter and musician, but he also runs his own construction business and is a devoted family man living a stone's throw from where he grew up in the western NC mountains. He is as meticulous and intense about his guitar and ballads as he is about his green built homes and raising his two girls.

As you'll see in our pilot episode, Aaron does both life and art exceptionally well. The folks around him are a big part of that.
